Flexibility is necessary
On Monday you will be told this is the decision.
On Tuesday, after you’ve already called a meeting and informed your people of the decision, you will be told it has been changed.
Now you look stupid.
How do you survive? You are flexible.
First, you do not get emotional about the situation. You are focused on results.
If you cannot be in a constant state of updating your priorities; if the notion of an ever-evolving set of opinions stresses you out, then you’re going to struggle in management.
I stole this story from a guy on Reddit (u/Himself89), because it perfectly captures the essence of why flexibility is critical for any leader. The reality is, decisions change, priorities shift, and as a leader, you’re often caught in the middle. The key to survival in such an environment is the ability to adapt, pivot, and continue moving forward without getting bogged down by the sudden changes around you.
You can’t get too attached to any single outcome or plan. Instead, your focus should be on execution and delivering results, regardless of how many times the ground shifts beneath you.
